1 Bedford Cords
Fabrics having cords or ribs in the direction of the warp produced by interweaving the weft in plain or twill order with alternate groups of warp threads. The ribs may be emphasised by the addition of wadding or stuffing warp threads. Generally woven in dobby looms. All cotton, all wool or mixed. A standard cotton cloth is made 36-in., 144 X 100 per inch, 40's/50's, with 20's wadding ends. The diagram gives the weave. When the face ends X are weaving plain in one section, the face ends are lifted in the other section, this is for two picks, and then the weave is reversed. The plain ends are separated in the reed.▪ Another cloth is made 30-in. from 24's warp, 36's weft, with every seventh cord made from coloured yarn. A heavy cloth is made for use as riding breeches in many qualities. Also made with wool yams. The illustration (A) shows a fancy Bedford cord for dress goods. There are ten padding cords to the inch, as shown by the broader cord stripes. These dress goods styles are made from a two-fold warp and single weft, all Egyptian yams. Fabric B is a three-colour fancy weave. The term " London Cord " is given to a heavy cotton Bedford Cord, woven with a 2 X 1 twill face. One quality is 88 X 80 per inch, 16/20's. Frequently padding ends are used to give prominence to the cords. Bedford Cord shirtings are made from the 144 X 110 cloth, usually 33/34-in. and with coloured stripes

2 Russian Cords
A combination of plain stripes with bold cords which often differ in colour from the ground. The cords form a very bold solid rib down the piece, and are made by working several thick cords together, with a douping thread crossing from side to side at every pick. This crossing thread is about three times the length of the ordinary warp. -
3 Hair Cords
These are cotton cloths in which single cords are run in the warp, the cords being set about 1/4-in. apart. Two beams are necessary. Yams are about 36's twist, 16's cords, 36's or 42's weft. Ends, picks and lengths vary considerably. -
4 Constitution Cords
These are very heavy cotton cloths and the broadest cords made. Heavy fustian looms are required to weave them. The design is usually on 12 ends and 12 picks requiring 8 staves. A variety made in Oldham is 31 in full 42 reed 300 picks per inch 2/30's twist 18's weft. The reed and weft vary every alternate pile pick is securely, bound in the cloth which makes it firm. Constitutions and cables have broad floats or races, which are some distance apart and are usually cut by machines of two kinds. No 1 machine is provided with a number of circular discs corresponding to that of the races to be cut. These discs are mounted on a revolving shaft and as the cloth passes underneath the discs sever the float threads. No 2 comprises a specially formed knife supported in a moveable holder, which is traversed laterally the distance from one cord to another, after each length of cut is completed. The cloth to be cut is presented to the knife at a convenient angle, and is caused to meet the edge of the knife by means of revolving rollers around one of which it is wound as the cutting proceeds. The machine has an automatic stop motion which operates immediately a fault is made.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Constitution Cords

5 Dented Cords

6 Cable Cords
A heavy type of corduroy with broad ribs, very similar to constitutionals. The ribs are up to 1-in. in width. Made about 46 X 130 per inch, 2/30's/40's cotton yarns. In Yorkshire a variety is made with botany weft, about 52's, in plain weave, with wide cords close together (see Constitutionals) -
7 Persian Cords
A plain weave cloth with a pattern formed by various warp ends working in 2's forming cords. Also known as the " Ottoman Cord," but this is a faulty description (see Ottoman). A typical cloth is made 72 ends and 112 picks per inch, 2/60's cotton warp, 60's botany weft. -

DIMITY (U.S.A.)A fabric woven on two shafts with faint cords, usually printed in small patterns on a white ground, but also sold white or dyed. Much used for ladies' or children's summer wear. A standard cloth is 37-in. grey, 34/5-in. finished. The cords are made by weaving two or three ends together as one, threaded through the same mail eye. ———————— This term was given by Indian traders to a cotton cloth of the fustian character, and usually figured with raised stripes, the stripes giving an appearance of embossing due to the thick weft floats. Today the dimity is understood to be a light cloth in the plain weave, but with cords lengthwise of the cloth. Made 38-in. wide, 70 ends and 64 picks per inch, 46's ground twist and 2/14's cords, 44's weft. -

The real cloth has a silk warp and worsted weft - 13/15 denier to 20/22 denier warp, 2/40's worsted for fine picks, with a thick cabled worsted yarn for cords. They are sometimes figured, as seen in the illustration, which is woven with a plain cord ground. The yarns are all botany worsted, viz., 2/76's-warp and 56's weft, 45-in. cloth from 50-in. warp.
